Getting started

Turn Nitpix on, find your way around the bar and the side panel, and turn it off.

Install#

Nitpix is coming to the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons. It runs in Chrome 116 and later (and in Edge, Brave, Arc and other Chromium browsers) and in Firefox 140 and later.

Turn it on#

Nitpix only ever runs on a tab where you turn it on. Use any of these:

  • Click the Nitpix icon in the browser toolbar.
  • Press Alt+Shift+M.
  • Right-click the page and choose Inspect with Nitpix.

The toolbar icon shows whether Nitpix is on for the current tab, in a version that suits a light or dark toolbar. Reloading the tab turns it off.

Browsers do not let extensions run on their settings pages, store pages or other extensions' pages. On those, the icon shows a ! badge.

The bar#

Turning Nitpix on shows a floating bar at the bottom of the page. Every button has a tooltip with its key. From left to right:

Rulers 2Page rulers, crosshair and guides

The bar stays where you put it. It never moves by itself.

The side panel#

The side panel has four tabs. Move between them with the left and right arrow keys.

  • Element: the selected element's selector, size, box model and CSS.
  • Contrast: contrast results for the selection or the visible page.
  • Page: meta tags, social previews and SEO checks (coming at launch).
  • Settings (the gear): your preferences.

By default the side panel stays closed when Nitpix turns on. To open it every time, turn on Open the side panel when Nitpix turns on in Settings. In Firefox the panel opens in the sidebar.

Turn it off#

Press Esc to step back one thing at a time: it cancels an area capture, then releases a guide, leaves the colour picker, removes a pin, clears the selection, and finally turns Nitpix off. You can also click Turn off on the bar, the toolbar icon, or press Alt+Shift+M again. Turning it off closes the side panel and leaves the page exactly as it was.
